                            Museum mpu Purwa

The Mpu Purwa Museum is located in Malang and houses a variety of interesting artifacts.  Curious?  The following is a brief description of the attraction of the museum as told by Travelingyuk contributor, Joshua Favian.
Malang actually has several museums, but people are more familiar with the Brawijaya Museum.  Even though there is still the Mpu Purwa Museum, which has a diverse collection of artifacts from the Hindu Buddhist era.
Mpu Purwa Museum is located at Jalan Soekarno Hatta no.  210, Lowokwaru District, Malang.  The location of this museum is still in a residential area, precisely to the west of Brawijaya Hospital.

This Ganesha statue is largely intact.  Depicted sitting like a baby.  The head wears a crown from her bun (jatamakuta) hair.  The tip of the proboscis is broken, the eyelids are chiseled rather deep (it is assumed that the eye was filled with beads or metal).  Four-handed hands (chessbhuja), right back hand carrying ax (parasu), left-back hand worn, right front hand is also worn out, the front hand is carrying a bowl (modaka).  Wearing a necklace (hara), kelat shoulder (keyura), bracelet (kankana), and anklet (nupura).  In front of the chest crosses the caste cord (upavita), distended abdomen (lambodara).  The seat is in the form of a red lotus flower (padmasana).  Behind him there is a backrest which is also meaningful as prabha.

In Hindu mythology, Ganesha is an elephant-headed god who is the leader of the Gana people (ie the elephant-worshiping community group).  From the etymology of its name, Ganesha is derived from the word Gana = group of elephant worshipers and Isha = master or leader.  Many versions tell about the origin of the god Ganesha.  According to the book of Brahmavairavata, it is said that when Parvati gave birth to a child from the results of her marriage to Lord Shiva, all the gods wanted to see the newborn baby because it was said that the baby had a handsome and shining face.  Is a god named SANI (Saturn) who also saw.  Dewa Sani has the power that something he looks carefully at will see what he sees.  Thus when he looked at the baby because of his good looks, the baby's head immediately exploded.  All the gods were shocked and did not know what to do.  Finally, the god Vishnu has a sense to find a replacement for the baby's head.  Vishnu came down to earth, and what he first encountered was an elephant.  Without thinking, the elephant's head was decapitated and then brought to heaven to be attached to the baby's body, so that the baby came back to life with an elephant head.

Meanwhile, according to the book Smaradahana written by Pu Dharmaja from the Kadiri kingdom, it is said that Ganesya was elephant-headed because when the goddess Parvati became pregnant, she was shocked by the arrival of the god Indra with an elephant named Airawata, who at that time suddenly passed in front of the goddess Parvati.  Because of surprise so that the baby was born, and it turns out that the newborn baby has an elephant head.

There is another version from India, namely that Ganesha was created from the veil of the goddess Parvati, and made it as her personal bodyguard.  When the goddess Parvati was bathing, the god Shiva was about to enter the park, but was prevented by the guardian of the new goddess Parvati.  Finally there was a war between Lord Shiva and the guardian of the goddess Parwati.  The bodyguard of the goddess Parwati can be defeated by beheading her head.  Seeing the incident the goddess Parwati was angry and demanded that her bodyguards be revived.  Lord Shiva was confused, and with Vishnu's help, the head of the bodyguard was replaced by the head of an elephant.

Ganesya as a god functions as a worshiping god both inside and outside the temple.  He was worshiped as a god of science, worshiped when people started for his work, also worshiped as a god who destroyed all evil obstacles (Vigna Vignesvara).  The vehicle or vehicle of the god Ganesha is a mouse.

A long time ago in the kingdom of Kalianget, a small village in North Bali, there lived a powerful king, whose name has long been forgotten. It happened an epidemic struck the whole village, killing most of villagers. One of the few survivors was I Nyoman Jayaprana, and then he live in the palace to serve the King.
In the palace Jayaprana grew up to become a handsome, brave and intelligent young man and became the favorite of the palace maids. The King thought it was time for Jayaprana to be married. “Please, you’re Majesty! I’m not intended to reject the word of the King. I want to get married but not with the palace maids. If permitted, I want to seek a wife outside the palace” said Jayaprana with respect. “Well Jayaprana if that’s what you want. I’m not going to stop you to choose a wife according to the choice of your heart,” said the King. Then, he went to the market and he saw a very beautiful girl, called Ni Nyoman Layonsari, and fell in love with her at the first sight. Layonsari too, later fell in love with Jayaprana, and then the couple were engaged to married.
Soon, the wedding took place at the palace. Everybody was so happy. However, the King was not happy at all. After the wedding party, the King ordered his loyal man, Maha Patih Saunggaling. “Layonsari is too precious for a servant like Jayaprana. I want her! So that’s why I ordered you go to Teluk Terima, and kill Jayaprana there, but not let Layonsari know about this” he said.
The following day, Jayaprana got an order from the King. He was go to Teluk Terima with Maha Patih Saunggaling. Before leaving for the battle Jayaprana gave Layonsari a message; “Layonsari, My beautiful wife, if this flower turns wilted, it indicates that I’m killed. I believe, if you’re wait faithfully for me, our love will exist forever” Layonsari became very sad, then Layonsari sang for Jayaprana with her deepest heart.
After arriving in the jungle, Saunggalin gave Jayaprana a letter from the King, it read; “Jayaprana I have ordered you to this place because I want to get rid of you. Saunggaling will cut your head and Layonsari shall be my wife.”
After reading the letter Jayaprana knew that this only a trap. Saunggaling then killed him.
Meanwhile, in the palace, Layonsari was convinced that something bad had happened to her husband, then the flower that given by her husband has been wilted.
“Layonsari, I feel very sorry that my beloved man, your husband, has died in the fight in Teluk Terima. I understand how difficult it is for you to face this, therefore I’ve come here to propose you to be my wife,” he said.
“No, impossible. I’d rather die, than be slaves to marry someone who had killed my husband!” Layonsari refused him firmly, then Layonsari run to the kingdom’s weapon stored, the king ran after her quickly, but it was too late. Layonsari pick up a keris and stabbed her self. Blood gushed from her body. “Layonsari! What are you doing! Are you crazy?!” the King screamed, knowing that he had failed.
